Marion Medical Mission
Board of Directors

 

Marion Medical Mission is controlled by a Board of Directors of up to 12 members. These are:

Tom Logan:      President
Tom is the founder of MMM who lives in Marion, Illinois and manages a low income housing complex.  In the 1960's, he worked with Albert Schweitzer for 2 months in Africa and spent time with Palestinian refugees in Jerusalem and in a Kibbutz in Israel. He worked with Dr. Martin Luther King in voter registration drives.  He graduated from McCormick Theological Seminary. In the 1970's he developed and built low income housing projects in 10 southern Illinois towns, with over 500 of the best and safest apartments in those towns. In 1985, he founded MMM. He has been on over 25 mission trips to Africa.

Jocelyn is the co-founder of MMM and lives in Marion, IL. In 1966-72 she was a teacher at Cabrini Green, Chicago.  Since 1972 she has helped develop, build and manage low-income housing in Southern Illinois.  She is an elder at First Presbyterian, Marion.  In 1985 she helped organize Marion Medical Mission.  She has been on more than 20 mission trips to Malawi where her major efforts were working  to help build schools in Malawi and installing shallow wells.  She says "Every trip is a rewarding and spiritually fulfilling experience as you see the changes made in the lives of so many as a result safe water and good schools. Uchindami Kwa Chiuta..Glory to God."

 Rev. Marlin Otte:   Vice-president
Pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Marion, IL for 35 years.  Supporter of MMM from its beginning and a member of the 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2009 Mission Teams. Highlights of his first trip in 1996 were assisting in the baptism of 153 people at one service (they had to go for more water!) and having the team install 56 shallow wells. "That was a record for MMM back then, but now we put in 2,500+ wells per year! Glory be to God!" Pastor Otte said.  "I will never tire of the joy & gratitude I see on the faces of the people when they first begin to pump their well. Nothing compares to the satisfaction one feels knowing those villagers will now have a clean, safe, sustainable source of water for the rest of their lives."

Jim Nussbaumer:  Vice-president
Jim is an electrical and software engineer, retired from a career at Hewlett Packard, and now living in Estes Park, Colorado. Following his initial trip in 1997, Jim became interested in the shallow wells program and since 1999 has traveled to Malawi with Marion Medical Mission every year. He has also escorted groups from his home church on mission/study tours of northern Malawi and has been to Malawi 11 times. When he is in Malawi, Jim enjoys meeting and photographing the people and has produced several video tapes and PowerPoint programs for use in spreading the word about Marion Medical Mission and the people of Malawi. He also manages the MMM WEB site and produced the brochures used to promote the MMM program. He is on the steering committee of the PCUSA Malawi Mission Network.

Hayden Boyd, Ph.D:    

Hayden Boyd lives with his wife Margot in Davidson, North Carolina and has two adult daughters. He received an AB in Economics from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota. He retired from the US Department of Commerce in 2002. From 2002 to 2005 he served as Professor and Director of Research at Mzuzu University in Malawi. Hayden began volunteer work with MMM in 2006. He has returned to Africa and helped install wells every year since that time.   He has worked on several special projects for MMM to help improve sustainability and insure shallow well water quality. He has served on several boards, civic organizations and in advisory roles as well as teaching at several universities.

Dr. Jocelyn Marie Collins Dr. Jocelyn Marie Collins:
Jocelyn Marie Collins, daughter of Tom and Jocelyn Logan, is a wife and mother of two young daughters.  She recently completed her surgical residency at the University of Cincinnati.  Marie began her work with Marion Medical Mission when she accompanied her father to Malawi at age 16, in 1993.  She returned to Malawi for 10 weeks in 1998 and most recently in 2003 after completing medical school.  She has also done volunteer work in Calcutta, India; Ethiopia and with Sisters of Charity in Ougadugu, Burkina Faso.
 

Rev. Suzanne (nee Vargo) Gorhau:

Suzanne is a Presbyterian pastor currently living in Omaha, Nebraska. She's been to Malawi three times, driving for the shallow well program as well as preaching and baptizing. She is delighted to be part of an organization that makes such a difference in the lives of everyone involved. Suzanne is pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Centerville, Iowa.

Joyce Heath:
Joyce is a Registered Nurse and a Women's Healthcare Nurse Practitioner  who lives in Decatur, Illinois with her husband Bill. They have been involved with the work of Marion Medical Mission since 1997.  She has been to Malawi 4 times with MMM and spent most of her time working with the Embangweni  Hospital and conducting workshops at various schools and churches. She helps to collect, pack and ship medications, hospital and school supplies for Malawi each year.

Harry T. Jones 

Harry T. Jones, husband of Holly and father of four children between 17 and 24 years old, lives in Thomasville, GA. He graduated from Washington and Lee University. He worked in retail businesses before joining the family fruit stand and and after 20 years sold that business. He currently works with Blackberry Patch, a speciality food producer. He serves as an elder in First Presbyterian Church, Thomasville, GA. He served as a volunteer advocate since August 2005 and  as a volunteer in Africa in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Harry T. has been very involved in fundraising for Marion Medical Mission in recent years.

Jerry W. Miller, Ph.D

Jerry is a native Californian who grew up in the Los Angeles area at a time when dairies and truck-farms were common. After high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, went to officer candidate school, and served at Fort Bliss, TX as an Air Defense Artillery officer during the Vietnam War. He returned home after completing his Army service to attended a local college where he received his B.A. in psychology. After working briefly, he headed to the University of Florida, Gainesville where he earned an M.S. in soil science. He went on to The Ohio St. Univ. where he worked for a Ph.D. in soil and environmental chemistry. Jerry has work in education and the environmental sciences industry. He currently teaches high school science and mathematics. His journey with Marion Medical Mission began in 1997 as part of a four member team from Decatur, IL who volunteered for the mission trip that year. He returned in the summer of 2000 as part of an advance team. Jerry has served on the MMM board since shortly after his return

Dr. Richard Morgan:    
Dick is an orthopedic surgeon living in Marion, Illinois and traveled on some of the very earliest trips with MMM.

Jerry Roush:
Jerry is a pattern maker who lives in Quincy, IL. He became involved with the M.M.M. in 1998 when he went to Malawi for the first time. He has now been on 10 trips with MMM. He says "The experience of doing mission work in Malawi is very rewarding and spirit filled. The only qualification that you need is to have faith in God  and to be willing to do something very special. God will always guide you and all you have to do is trust in him."
